DPIA Community Development Work

The refugee community organisations play a pivotal role in facilitating the integration or inclusion of refugees into the host community in Wales. We are currently working with about 34 refugee community organisations across Wales including the umbrella organisation, Refugee Voice Wales to help develop their capacity.

Areas of work

  • Promoting drop in sessions for RCOs and support groups in Swansea and Cardiff. The drop in sessions are an important part of community development as they give people an opportunity to get to know each other, provide a welcoming atmosphere for any new arrivals and assist members that have language barriers by filling application forms
  • Train the trainer for Refugee Community Organisations
  • CRB check training for communities
  • Child protection training
  • Campaigning and advocacy work with trade unions
  • Meet the funder events

Social Activities

  • Hosted 'refugee football world cup' with the assistance of Trade Unions TUC and GMB sponsoring the medals.
  • Work with Football Association of Wales to tap into the talent among refugees

Future Work Areas

We are in the process of undertaking a needs analysis for RCOs across Wales to document the activities that these organisations are undertaking. The needs analysis is being carried out together with Glamorgan University and other partners in Wales.
