Providing Refugee Awareness Training -

DPIA offers Refugee Awareness Training to voluntary organisations, community groups, statutory bodies and schools. This training aims to educate the public about the rights and realities of people seeking sanctuary. We tailor the training to fit the needs of particular organisations, but the following are main objectives:
  • Understand the definition of refugee and asylum seeker and the history of those terms;
  • Talk about some of the reasons people seek sanctuary and share experiences of people who have sought sanctuary in the U.K.;
  • Explain the process through which a person claims asylum and what happens while people are awaiting decisions on their claim;
  • Overview of the support to which asylum seekers and refugees are entitled;
  • Challenge stereotypes and bust myths commonly applied to people seeking sanctuary.
We welcome people seeking sanctuary and refugees to participate in both the development of training content and/or delivery of presentations. Such participation may be considered volunteer experience which could go on a C.V. The only thing necessary is a desire to share knowledge, perspective and ideas. Beyond that, participants can have a chance to showcase and practice various individual skills and strengths such as composition, research, IT, public speaking, and so forth.

Encouraging Community Based Initiatives -

DPIA supports small scale projects or event series, which promote cross cultural activities and interaction between people who came to the U.K. seeking sanctuary and people in indigenous Wales communities.

We also aim to identify opportunities for refugees and people seeking sanctuary to participate as members and leaders in broader community organisations and neighbourhood groups.
