Inclusion Work Purpose:
Promote inclusion and integration of people seeking sanctuary as full participants in Wales communities by .Providing Refugee Awareness Training -
DPIA offers Refugee Awareness Training to voluntary organisations, community groups, statutory bodies and schools. This training aims to educate the public about the rights and realities of people seeking sanctuary. We tailor the training to fit the needs of particular organisations, but the following are main objectives:
- Understand the definition of refugee and asylum seeker and the history of those terms;
- Talk about some of the reasons people seek sanctuary and share experiences of people who have sought sanctuary in the U.K.;
- Explain the process through which a person claims asylum and what happens while people are awaiting decisions on their claim;
- Overview of the support to which asylum seekers and refugees are entitled;
- Challenge stereotypes and bust myths commonly applied to people seeking sanctuary.
Encouraging Community Based Initiatives -
DPIA supports small scale projects or event series, which promote cross cultural activities and interaction between people who came to the U.K. seeking sanctuary and people in indigenous Wales communities.
We also aim to identify opportunities for refugees and people seeking sanctuary to participate as members and leaders in broader community organisations and neighbourhood groups.
If you are interested in Refugee Awareness Training or have an idea for a community based initiative, please contact DPIA's Inclusion Officer.
